{"id":2205,"date":"2019-01-03T11:01:38","date_gmt":"2019-01-03T16:01:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.syracusewomanmag.com\/?p=2205"},"modified":"2018-12-19T11:05:31","modified_gmt":"2018-12-19T16:05:31","slug":"syracuse-eats-all-in-the-family-soup-r-salads","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.syracusewomanmag.com\/?p=2205","title":{"rendered":"Syracuse Eats: All in the family: Soup R Salads"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Food is a family business for Cherri Hassett.<\/p>\n<p>And if you come through the door at Soup R Salads, where Cherri is the chef and owner, you\u2019re pretty much family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou walk in and you go, \u2018Hey, how\u2019s the kids?\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cWe know everybody that comes in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then there\u2019s her actual family. Nearly all of the employees are related to her somehow\u2014her sister helps cook, her daughter takes orders, her cousin works the counter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s basically been all family that works here,\u201d Cherri said. \u201cIt\u2019s more stressful in a lot of ways, but you don\u2019t have to be fake. I like working with family better than with strangers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cherri opened the popular lunch spot seven years ago after working for 15 years in the restaurant business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was unemployed and I figured, I\u2019m not working for anyone else,\u201d she said. \u201cI kind of knew what people liked from working downtown. I had never really made soup, but my boyfriend taught me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now, Soup R Salads is known for hearty, healthy, homestyle food made with fresh ingredients. With the exception of a few dressings \u2014 \u201cIf I find one that\u2019s outstanding that I can\u2019t do as well, I\u2019ll buy it,\u201d Cherri said \u2014 everything is homemade, mostly the old-fashioned way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t really use recipes,\u201d Cherri said. \u201cIt\u2019s more, so much of this, so much of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However she puts them together, Cherri must be doing something right, because come lunchtime, the little sandwich shop is packed with hungry customers. And they\u2019ve got plenty of options to choose from. Every day, there\u2019s a full roster of cold deli sandwiches and cold salads, and then there are the specials: a hot entr\u00e9e, daily soups (Mondays it\u2019s mulligatawny, chili Tuesdays, Wednesdays feature Italian Wedding, Thursdays\u2019 special is Cajun sausage chicken and Fridays specialty is chowder \u2014 plus two others of Cherri\u2019s choice each day) and three daily salad specials, as well as a wrap or sandwich special. Fresh fruit salad graces the menu every day in the summer. When Cherri first opened the restaurant, she was sure she\u2019d made a mistake.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI started out making $200 a day,\u201d she recalled. \u201cMy dad would come in and I\u2019d be like, \u2018I\u2019m never going to make it, Dad.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But word soon spread about the tasty fare at Soup R Salads and the crowds picked up. Now there\u2019s a steady line at lunchtime every day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s pretty awesome,\u201d Cherri said.<\/p>\n<p>While the food brings in the crowds, that\u2019s not the only draw.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey like the employees, the customers do,\u201d Cherri said.<\/p>\n<p>While she\u2019d like to be able to enlarge the restaurant, Cherri said she wants to keep that same atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would like a bigger space,\u201d she said. \u201cBut I don\u2019t want it to get so big where we don\u2019t know anybody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Soup R Salads is located at 308 S.
